The Concrete Jungle
I have been collecting images for my personal project, Concrete Jungle, for a little while now. This is a wide edit, with many more images that need to be added and exchanged, but I thought I would start sharing what I have made so far.
Toronto is often referred to as the Concrete Jungle. This is my interpretation of the jungle and how it affects the behaviour of the people within it. My focus to some extent was to see how people interact with the structural confines of the city. Its concrete architecture has a historical context, often changing over the decades as concrete became commonplace. The people are just as diverse.
It was in the summer months that the Concrete Jungle began to really appeal to me. The trees would intertwine with the concrete - green patches amongst the shades of grey towering walls that line downtown Toronto. I was drawn to images that depicted how society was adapting to the space around the concrete. I began to watch their body language and relate it to animals in a jungle.
During my time working on this project I have felt urges to enjoy the jungle, to play, but I have also felt the desire to escape. I believe those feelings seeped into the work somewhere along the line and I was drawn to make pictures that defined the pull between the ability to find great heights and, at the same time, be very confined. For me, the concrete jungle is both chaotic and systematic, but the people adapt.
Hope you enjoy.
